Math Support Tutoring

Kids need a teacher who is well versed in children's development of number sense to guide them to develop deep, conceptual understanding. Many corporate tutoring venues base their instruction and assessment on speed and memorization of procedures without ensuring the critical number sense that will stay with children forever and will allow them to make connections and create new understandings long after the tutoring ends.  Further, web-based video tutorial platforms, workbooks and electronic learning platforms do not typically build meaningful, enduring connections that are based on deep assessment of individual understanding.

Why hire me to be your child's tutor?

I am an elementary educator who has been deeply engrained in mathematics educational research for many years.  That's my specialty!  In fact, I travel around the country teaching other educators how to enhance the learning of their students by bringing them cutting edge research into how young children develop number sense and computation understanding.  I know and understand the methods of teaching students to ensure enduring mathematical understanding that will stay with your child forever.  My background allows me to have a deep understanding of the developmental sequences of computational understanding so I can authentically assess your child to understand their unique perspectives of number and can design appropriate instructional activities to guide them to create new and deeper meanings.  Most importantly, I do the majority of the learning WITH ENGAGING, FUN SETTINGS!​

These individualized sessions are designed to:

• Support the student with math that they are learning in the classroom

• Provide support for the student in targeted areas

1:1 Private Sessions at Amy's Louisville home or remotely, via Zoom 

(other locations carries a travel fee, see below)

For each session, time is spent outside of face to face time for planning and preparing materials.

       *All tutoring must begin with assessment series, scroll down for assessment details

       *I am always happy to conference with parents and/or teachers.  Beyond a 15 minute consult or meeting, there will be a charge.  Please see below.

SESSION RATES:

• 45 minutes - $95/session

  • most students engage in 45 minute sessions​

• 30 minutes - $75/session

  • ideal for younger students and those with a higher level of focus challenges​

• 60 minutes - $105/session

• Meetings and consult calls with parents and/or teachers and other professionals that exceed 15min. will be charged in increments of 15 minutes at $35.00 each (charge begins after the first 15 minutes.)  

*Materials kits for remote tutoring will need to be picked up  from Louisville 1-2 days prior to the first instructional session

ADDITIONAL EXPENSES:

TRAVEL FEE

- In addition to the charges listed above, there will be a supplement added to each session to cover travel time for sessions at locations other than Amy's home.   

+ $15 for homes and schools in the South end of Boulder, or locations within 15 minutes of Louisville

+ $20 for North and West Boulder homes and Schools or more than 15 minutes from Louisville

Please understand that traveling to, from and between locations reduces the number of sessions I can fit into a day and, thus, a charge is necessary to accommodate scheduling.

ROOM FEES

- If clients choose a meeting location with an accompanying fee, any costs associated with space usage will be passed along and will be reflected in the invoice.

Semi-Private Sessions

* 45 minute semi-private sessions are intended for enrichment and grade level

reinforcement only, not ideal for remediation. 

Minimum 6 session commitment, pre-paid at the time of booking.

*Sessions must be paid by all participants within 3 days of booking to secure your slot or at least 10 days before beginning sessions, whichever comes first.  

*Kits will need to be picked up by parents from my home 1-2 days prior to the first session if sessions take place via Zoom.

Assessment Series

Ideally this would happen in person.  This can happen remotely when it is not possible to meet in person.  When in person at your location, the travel stipend will apply for each session.

*All 1:1 tutoring sequences must begin with an assessment series.  Any tutoring sequence resuming after a tutoring break of 6 months or more must also begin with an assessment series. 

Assessments consist of two or more, 30-45 minute assessment sessions. These assessments are interview-based and are used to analyze student strategies in computation and number sense. They do not assess all areas of mathematics and do not determine a grade level equivalency. Rather, these assessments determine stages of development according to research by Dr. Les Steffe, Dr. Bob Wright and others. The assessments can be used to determine next steps for each individual child whether they are in need of extra support with challenges or they need extensions to further challenge them. 

$250 covers the 1st two sessions in the  assessment series which are required before beginning any 1:1 tutoring sequence.  Some students require a 3rd or 4th session to complete all assessments.  In these cases, 3rd and 4th sessions will be billed at the regular tutoring rate.   Every child is different and there are many factors which determine how many sessions will be needed for assessment.  I am happy to explain this further.

At the end of the assessment sessions, a written summary of the assessments, including personalized goals for the student, will be created and e-mailed to parents/guardians within one month of the completion of assessments and can be shared by parents with classroom teachers if desired (you can ask classroom teachers if they have been trained in “AddVantage Math Recovery” as my assessments are based on research used to design that Professional Development tool.) 

Note that sometimes additional sessions beyond the initial two scheduled sessions are needed to complete assessments but this can be done during a subsequent, regular tutoring session to be billed at the normal tutoring session price (in addition to the regular assessment fee.)  Since all students work at different paces, it is difficult to determine ahead of time whether a student will need additional time for assessment.
